Why go
Nyungwe is Rwanda's most overlooked park, mostly because a first-time itinerary already has gorilla trekking and Akagera competing for time. But it offers something genuinely different — one of Africa's oldest rainforests, chimpanzee tracking, and a canopy walkway suspended above the treetops.
What to do
Chimpanzee tracking is the headline activity — a guided trek that's generally less physically demanding than gorilla trekking, though timing is similarly unpredictable since the group moves through the forest. The canopy walkway is a shorter, more accessible activity that doesn't require the same fitness or time commitment.
How long to stay
One to two nights is typical — enough for a chimpanzee trek and the canopy walk without needing the longer stay a first-time visitor might give Volcanoes or Akagera.
Who it's good for
Travellers who've already done a Rwanda trip and want to go deeper, or first-timers building a longer itinerary with room for a third park.
What to know
Nyungwe is further from Kigali than Volcanoes or Akagera, which is the main reason it doesn't always make a first-timer's itinerary. HighEnds confirms travel times from Kigali and permit requirements for chimpanzee tracking when preparing your quote.
Connecting it to the rest of Rwanda
Nyungwe pairs naturally with Lake Kivu as a west-of-the-country route, or as an extension added to the classic Kigali–Akagera–Volcanoes loop for travellers with more time.
