Why we picked Rwanda

For a first African adventure trip, we consistently point people toward Rwanda — not because it's the only good option, but because it packs an unusually complete first-time experience into a manageable trip length: gorilla trekking, a savannah safari, and a capital city that's genuinely easy to navigate, all within one country.

What makes it work as a "first"

Rwanda is compact by regional standards — the distances between Kigali, Volcanoes National Park, and Akagera are real but manageable, which matters for a first trip where you don't yet know how much ground you want to cover.

Best for

Couples and small groups after a genuine wildlife experience without an overly complicated multi-country itinerary.

What to pair it with

A few days by Lake Kivu afterward makes a natural, slower close to the trip — see our 7 Days in Rwanda itinerary for how this fits together.
